A Clinical Analysis(I) of Head Injured Patients in Children


Abstract
The medical records from 133 cases of head injuries under the age of 15 years were reviewed retrospectively. The cases were classified into mild, moderate and severe groups according to severity and diagnosed as brain contusion, skull fracture
and
intracranial hemorrhage.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) Of head injured patients, 18.6% was pediatric group, which showed peak incidence between the ages of 5 and 7 years,
2) The accident occurred mostly from May to July.
3) The head injuries were caused by traffic accident and fall down mainly.
4) In the severe group, multiple combined diagnosis was common.
5) The skull fracture was found in high incidence(63.9%), 74.5% of these was linear fracture and 34.1% was accompanied by intracranial hemorrhage.
6) The intracranial hemorrhage was found in 30.8% and 70.7% of these was accompanied by skull fracture.
7) Admission GCS score correlated with GOS well. The mild and moderate group showed good recovery. The only severe group showed mortality and troublesome morbidity.
8) Frequent sequalae were hemiparesis and visual disturbance. The most frequent combined injury was the long bone frature of extremities.
